Orbital turns 25!

2023

Ben Doherty was appointed as CEO of the Orbital Internet Group after working with the business for more than 20 years. Business growth has been exponential in the past 12 months with a 30% increase in employees.

Growing our team

2022

We appointed a Group Finance Director, Head of Networks, Head of Engineering and Planning, Head of Marketing and restructured existing roles to better serve our customers. We also recruited more engineers across the country and unbundled 7 more telephone exchanges, bringing the total to 27.

Accelerating growth

2021

An identified investment opportunity with private equity firm Mobeus enabled us to accelerate our growth plans. As our Full Fibre roll-out grew, we created a dedicated team and built a custom Fibre Training room to facilitate delivery.

Navigating the pandemic

2020

Covid-19 hit and we’re proud that our team continued to support customers during this confusing time, expertly facilitating home working and maintenance. We also welcomed a Head of People to support our staff’s growth and hired nationwide full-time engineers for faster response to call-outs. Vfast Internet started rolling out PIA Fibre.

Vfast Parks is born

2019

In this year, we expanded our portfolio with SIM solutions and launched Vfast Parks to focus on the successful unique service we provided to Park Holidays UK.

Orbital turns 20!

2018

Celebrating 20 years of serving local businesses, we launched our first Full Fibre service built and delivered across our own network to a new business park, with plans for more in the future. We also secured one of our largest contracts to date with Park Holidays UK, delivering ultra-fast speeds which expanded to all their parks as they grew their brand.

Adapting to changes

2017

We invested heavily in our in-house created Hosted VoIP solution following the news that the traditional ISDN network will be switched off by 2025. We also launched our refreshed website for optimised customer experience.

90% coverage of county-wide FTTC cabinets

2015

Our two-year exchange rollout project completed to offer over 90% coverage of enabled FTTC cabinets in the local area. This was also a record year for new fibre leased line customers.

Our solutions become bespoke

2013

This year saw us unbundle our services from BT telephone lines, granting clients customisable solutions that met their business requirements. We were able to provide generic GEA services and more advanced products with WiMax failover; something that no one else in the area can offer.

Better together

2011

After working in separate locations for 12 years, we came together under one roof to better serve our customers. Our head office was designed to be an inspiring work environment and we’re still here today!

Expanding to the outskirts

2009

Our fibre and wireless infrastructure continued to grow, as we began to offer connectivity to outskirt areas of Kent thanks to our newly built point of presence (PoP) in Tunbridge Wells.

Three’s a charm

2007

We needed more office space to deliver our personal and innovative service to a growing client base. And so, a third office was acquired to house our sister company, Vfast.

Bigger and better

2006

We were able to acquire the network of our biggest competitor and consolidated their network into ours. This resulted in more powerful connectivity services for our customers.

Growing the network

2003

We grew our county-wide network by creating a ring of fibre circuits for improved connectivity and independence from leased line providers. Within a year, we increased our rack count from 1 to 8. We also started peering with other leading ISPs.

First wireless solution

2001

We introduced our first wireless solution that offered faster speeds of 2.4ghz, surpassing the maximum 2Mbit offered by traditional ADSL over phone lines. We also became a local internet registry, enabling our network to become part of the internet.

The .com boom

1999

The ‘.com boom’ quickly scaled our output, leading to us moving to two bigger premises within a year. Our server room utilised NTL, cable and wireless connectivity, including a single 45Mbit circuit and bonded 2Mbit circuits.

Orbital was born

Orbital was born from humble beginnings. The full extent of our network was a single 42u rack cabinet housing our main Pentium 166MMX FreeBSD server, along with banks of 28k modems.
